Mary Magdalene
"Miryam of Magdala" (Mary of the Tower)
The First Witness. A woman from the fishing town of Magdala, she was liberated from seven demons by Jesus. She became a devoted follower and financier of His ministry. She is the "Apostle to the Apostles," the first person to see the Risen Lord and the first commissioned to preach the Resurrection.
Era: The Gospels (c. 30 AD)
Primary Texts: Luke 8; John 20; Mark 27
Role: Disciple, Witness
Who was she before the freedom?

From Magdala, a wealthy town on the Sea of Galilee known for its fish processing. The name "Magdalene" might be a title ("The Tower") or simply her hometown.

Luke 8:2 states that "seven demons had come out of her." She lived in a state of spiritual oppression, mental anguish, and likely social isolation. She was a woman defined by "Darkness."

She was formed by Liberation. Jesus didn't just teach her; He set her free. Her loyalty was forged in the fire of being rescued from hell on earth.

What shaped her?

She was shaped by Following. Luke 8 mentions that she and other women "were helping to support them out of their own means." She left her home to travel with the itinerant Rabbi, providing for His needs.

John 20:11
"Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb..."

She was shaped by Remaining. When the male disciples fled, she stood at the cross. She watched where they laid His body. She returned to the tomb while it was still dark. She refused to leave Him, even in death.

1. The Exorcism (Freedom).
2. The Service (Support).
3. The Cross (Witness).
4. The Garden (Recognition).
5. The Announcement (Apostle).

Who Walked With Her? Who Stood Against Her?
The Savior
Jesus (Rabboni)The Teacher she loved. When He called her name "Mary" in the garden, she instantly recognized Him.
The Sisterhood
Joanna & SusannaOther women healed by Jesus (Luke 8:3). Joanna was the wife of Chuza (Herod's steward). They formed a circle of support.
The Oppressors
The Seven DemonsThe forces that once controlled her mind and body. Jesus' authority over them proved His divinity to her.
The Doubters
The ApostlesWhen she told them Jesus was alive, "they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense" (Luke 24:11).
What did she carry for others?

The First Evangelist. She carried the news that changed the world: "I have seen the Lord!" She was the bridge between the Empty Tomb and the Upper Room.

She provided Tenacity. She stayed when hope was gone. Her grief was a form of faithfulness.

Jesus depended on her financial support during His ministry. The disciples depended on her eyewitness account to spark their own faith.

She represents the restoration of Woman. In a culture where a woman's testimony was invalid in court, God chose a woman to be the primary witness of the Resurrection.

How did her story arc?
The Darkness
Possessed by seven demons; suffering; isolated.
The Healing
Meeting Jesus; the exorcism; the decision to follow Him.
The Ministry
Traveling from Galilee to Jerusalem; serving the group.
The Sorrow
The Crucifixion; the burial; the Sabbath wait.
The Morning
Mistaking Jesus for the gardener; hearing her name; being sent to the brothers.
Where did she break? Where did she hold?

She held fast to Love. While Peter held to logic (and failed) and others held to fear, Mary held to love. She loved Jesus enough to risk the Roman soldiers to be near His dead body.

She broke under Misunderstanding. "They have taken my Lord away, and I don't know where they have put him!" She couldn't conceive of resurrection; she only wanted to care for the corpse. Jesus had to expand her vision.

John 20:17
"Jesus said, 'Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them...'"
Jesus gently redirects her clingy affection into missional action. "Don't just hold me; go tell them."
Shadows & Fulfillments — Typological Connections
The Garden of Eden: In the first garden, a woman (Eve) encountered death; in the Easter garden, a woman (Mary) encountered Life.
The Bride in Song of Solomon: "I will search for the one my heart loves." Mary searching the tomb echoes the Shulammite woman searching for her beloved.
What does her story teach us about how God forms a person?

Mary's story teaches us that those who have been forgiven much, love much. Her devotion was fueled by gratitude. Formation is not just about learning doctrine; it's about being liberated and then dedicating your freedom to the Liberator. It also teaches that Seeking is rewarded. She sought Him at the tomb, and she found Him.

John 20:16
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary.' She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, 'Rabboni!' (which means 'Teacher')."
The Good Shepherd calls His sheep by name, and they know His voice.
Formation Invitation — How Her Story Forms Us
Observe

What "demons" (addictions, fears, traumas) has Jesus cast out of you? Does your current level of devotion match the magnitude of your deliverance?

Reflect

Are you willing to be the first to believe? Are you willing to say "I have seen the Lord" even when the "apostles" (the experts) think it is nonsense?

Practice

The Practice of Early Rising: Go to your "tomb" (prayer place) early this week, while it is still dark. Don't ask for anything. Just seek Him.

Pray

"Risen Lord, I hear You calling my name. Thank You for delivering me from the darkness. When I am weeping in confusion, reveal Yourself to me. Turn my mourning into dancing. Give me the feet of a messenger to run and tell the others: 'He is alive!'"

Ages 3–5: Mary was crying because she thought Jesus was gone. But Jesus was standing right there! He said, "Mary!" and she was so happy. Jesus knows your name too.
Ages 6–9: Mary Magdalene was the very first person to know that Jesus came back to life. God chose her to tell the secret to everyone else. Why did God pick her? (Because she loved Him and stayed close).
Ages 10–13: Jesus saved Mary from seven bad spirits. Before that, her life was very scary. She followed Jesus everywhere because she was so thankful. How can we show Jesus we are thankful?
Teens/Adults: Mary thought Jesus was the gardener. She didn't recognize Him until He spoke her name. Why is personal revelation ("calling my name") more powerful than just seeing a face?
Compare & Contrast
vs. The Other Mary (Bethany): Mary of Bethany sat at Jesus' feet listening; Mary Magdalene followed Jesus' feet serving. Both were commended. Both show different aspects of discipleship.
vs. The Soldiers: The soldiers at the tomb saw the angel and "shook and became like dead men" (fear); Mary saw the angel and talked to him (faith/love). Love casts out fear.
