Catnip (*Nepeta cataria*) is famous for making cats crazy, but for humans, it does the exact opposite: it brings deep calm and sleep. It is one of the gentlest medicines in the garden, safe enough for a colicky baby or a restless child. It teaches us about "Childlike Faith"—how we can bring our fussiness and discomfort to the Father, and He will gently rock us to sleep with His peace.
Nepetalactone (the cat attractor), volatile oils, tannins.
The Fussy: A child (or adult!) who is overtired and cranky.
The Tummy-Ache: Nervous digestion, gas pain, or colic.
The Hot & Bothered: Low-grade fever with restlessness.
Catnip is the "herbal pacifier."
Pest Repellent: The strong minty-skunky smell repels aphids, squash bugs, and flea beetles. It protects the garden vegetables.
Pollinator Party: Bees and butterflies LOVE the tiny white/purple flowers. It blooms for a long time.
Friends & Helpers: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Squash (protects them all!).
✓ Protect the Plant: If you have cats, they will roll on it and crush it! Put a wire cage over the young plant until it is established.
✓ Harvest Timing: Pick the leaves and flowers just as the blooms begin to open for the highest oil content.
✓ Containment: Like all mints, it can spread. Keep it in a pot or a designated bed if you don't want it everywhere.
Tea (Hot): For fevers. Drink hot and wrap up in blankets to sweat it out.
Tea (Warm): For digestion/colic. Sip slowly after meals.
Glycerite: Alcohol-free tincture made with vegetable glycerin. Sweet and perfect for kids.
Cat Toy: Dry the leaves and sew them into a felt mouse!
Mark 18:17 — "Receive like a little child"
"Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."
Catnip is the medicine of childhood. It reminds us to be humble, to admit when we are "cranky" or hurt, and to accept the simple comfort that God offers.
Level 1: Rub a leaf. Does it smell like mint? Or something stronger (musky)?
Level 2: Look at the leaves. Are they heart-shaped? Are they fuzzy or smooth? (Fuzzy!).
Level 3: Why do you think God made a plant that excites cats but calms humans? (Hint: Creation is full of playful surprises!).
Nepeta cataria (Mint family)
1. Insomnia/Anxiety: A safe, gentle sedative for children and adults.
2. Colic/Gas: Relaxes the gut wall to release trapped gas.
3. Fevers: Hot tea helps the body "vent" heat through the skin.
4. Teething: Rubbing the tea on gums can numb pain slightly.
Catnip is the "Gentle Nanny." Use it when the house is loud, the baby is crying, or your own heart is restless. It reminds us that God is not annoyed by our fussiness. He provides simple, gentle remedies to calm us down so we can rest in His arms.
Preparation Tip: "Tummy-Calm" Tea: 1 part Catnip, 1 part Fennel Seed, 1 part Chamomile. Excellent for digestion.
