Elecampane (*Inula helenium*) is a plant of deep ventilation. It has been used since the time of the Romans to clear the "stuck" places in the lungs and stomach. Its root is a powerful "Expectorant," warming the chest and pushing out what does not belong. It teaches us about "The Breath of Life"—how God's Spirit clears away the "congestion" of our souls, allowing us to breathe deeply of His grace again.
Inulin (up to 44%), Alantolactone, Helenin, Volatile oils, Mucilage.
The Congested: Deep, "stuck" coughs that won't move.
The Cold: Someone who feels chilled, with weak digestion.
The Depressed: Historically used for "melancholy" and sadness held in the chest.
Elecampane warms and clears.
The Garden Anchor: A massive plant that stabilizes soil and provides heavy biomass for compost.
Bee Lighthouse: The bright yellow shaggy flowers are held high above other plants, signaling to pollinators from afar.
Friends & Helpers: Comfrey, Angelica, Marshmallow (The "Warming/Moistening" group).
✓ Root Sovereignty: Only dig the roots in the Fall of the 2nd year. They need a full cycle to build their medicine.
✓ Smelling is Seeing: The dried root should smell like bananas and camphor. If it doesn't smell strong, it has lost its power.
✓ Seed Saving: Let the shaggy heads dry on the plant. Each head holds hundreds of tiny seeds.
Decoction: Simmer 1 tsp chopped dry root in 1 cup water for 20 mins. Best for deep coughs.
Syrup: Combine strong decoction with honey (1:1). Soothing for children's coughs.
Tincture: Dried root (1:5) in 60-70% alcohol. Dosage: 2-4 ml 3x daily.
Honey: Steep fresh root slices in honey for 2 weeks. Delicious medicine!
Genesis 2:7 — "The breath of life"
"Then the Lord God formed a man... and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life."
Elecampane helps us breathe. It is a physical reminder that our breath is a gift from God, and that His Spirit can clear away any blockage that stops us from experiencing His life.
Level 1: Look at the leaves. Why are they so huge and "fuzzy" like velvet underneath?
Level 2: Look at the flowers. Why are the yellow petals so shaggy and messy? (Hint: Like a lion's mane!).
Level 3: Why is the root called "prebiotic"? What is it "feeding" inside of us? (Hint: The hidden world of the gut).
Inula helenium (Aster family)
1. Lung Tonic: Chronic bronchitis, asthma, and deep "wet" coughs.
2. Digestive Support: Helps with bloating and feeds good gut flora (Inulin).
3. Warming: Excellent for people with "cold" constitutions and poor circulation.
4. Immune Stimulant: Helps the body fight lingering winter infections.
Elecampane is the "Lung of the Garden." Use it when your spirit feels heavy and your "breath" feels short. It reminds us that God's Spirit is warming and clearing—He wants to move the "heavy things" out of our hearts so we can sing and serve Him with joy.
Preparation Tip: "Prebiotic Roast": Slow-roast the roots with carrots and parsnips for a healthy, starchy gut-healing meal.
