Pine — The Winter King

Immortal Life, Respiration, & The Golden Resin

The Pine tree (*Pinus spp.*) is a symbol of "Everlasting Life" because it never loses its green. In the middle of winter, when everything else looks dead, the pine stands tall, full of Vitamin C and life-saving medicine. Its resin acts as a "scab" for the tree, sealing wounds instantly. It teaches us about "Persistence"—how we should remain vibrant in our faith even in the coldest seasons—and about "God's Healing Seal" that protects our vulnerabilities.

Medicinal Actions

  • Expectorant: Clears deep chest mucus and opens airways.
  • Antimicrobial: Pine oil kills bacteria and fungi.
  • Antioxidant: High levels of Vitamin C and pycnogenol.
  • Diuretic: Supports kidney flushing.
  • Astringent: Tightens and disinfects wounds.

Key Constituents

Vitamin C, Volatile oils (pinene), Resins, Flavonoids.

The "Pine Personality"

The Depleted: Someone suffering from winter "scurvy" or low immunity.

The Congested: Sinusitis or bronchitis that feels "tight" and cold.

The Wounded: Needing a "drawing" agent for splinters or infection.

Pine protects and restores.

Ecological Role

The Carbon Sink: Pines are massive providers of oxygen and filters for the atmosphere year-round.

The Shelter: Provides vital winter cover and seeds (pine nuts) for birds and small mammals.

Friends & Helpers: Mushrooms (many edible mushrooms only grow near pine roots!).

Stewardship & Ethics

✓ Harvest After Storms: The best time to collect needles and resin is after a windstorm when branches have fallen. Don't damage the live bark!

✓ The Resin Rule: Only take resin that is already hardened and "crying" out of the tree. Never cut a tree just to get its sap.

✓ Species Check: Most pines are safe, but avoid the Yew tree (not a true pine), which is toxic.

Preparation Methods

Needle Tea: Steep a handful of fresh green needles in hot (not boiling) water for 10 mins. Very high in Vitamin C.
Bark Decoction: Simmer inner bark for 20 mins for deep chest coughs.
Resin Salve: Melt pine resin with olive oil and beeswax. The best "Drawing Salve" for splinters.
Steam: Inhale the scent of needles in hot water to clear sinuses.

Psalm 92:12 — "Like a cedar of Lebanon"

"The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon."

The Pine (and Cedar) are symbols of the righteous person who stays green and fruitful through every trial. Its "evergreen" nature is a physical sign of the eternal life God gives us.

Observation Questions

Level 1: Count the needles in a cluster. Is it 2, 3, or 5? (This tells you what species it is!).
Level 2: Feel the resin. Is it sticky? What does it smell like? (Hint: Like clean air!).
Level 3: Why is pine needle tea better in winter than summer? (Hint: Think about when our bodies need the most Vitamin C).

🌲 PINE

WILDCRAFT ID • Identification & Use

Pinus spp. (Pine family)

🌲

[Image: Evergreen tree with needle clusters and woody cones; sticky golden resin on the bark]
PARTS USED: Needles (fresh), Inner Bark, Resin (Sap), Pollen
HARVEST: Year-round (best needles in Winter)
TASTE: Resin-y, Sour (Vitamin C), Aromatic, Woody
ENERGY: Warming, Drying

QUICK ID

  • NEEDLES: Grow in bundles (fascicles) of 2, 3, or 5. Always evergreen.
  • CONES: Woody, scale-like structures holding the seeds.
  • RESIN: Sticky, clear-to-golden sap that hardens into "amber."
  • SCENT: Powerful, clean, "Pine-Sol" aroma when needles are crushed.

Primary Indications

1. Respiratory: Excellent for sinus infections, head colds, and lung congestion.
2. Immunity: Needle tea is 5x higher in Vitamin C than lemons.
3. Wounds: Resin is a natural antiseptic "bandage" for cuts and splinters.
4. Rheumatism: Pine needle baths soothe aching muscles and joints.

Safety & Contraindications

  • The "Not-Pines": Do NOT harvest Yew (flat needles, red berry) or Norfolk Island Pine.
  • Resin: Can be very irritating to sensitive skin if not diluted in oil.
  • Pregnancy: Avoid large amounts of pine needle tea (some species contain compounds that can be abortifacient).

Formation Connection

Pine is the "Eternal Witness." Use it when you feel "winter-weary" or drained. It reminds us that we are called to be "Evergreen"—to maintain our connection to the Life-Giver so that we never run out of the "Vitamin C" of joy and hope, even when the world around us is dormant.

Preparation Tip: "Winter Vitality Tea": Chopped Pine needles + Rosehips + Ginger. Steep for 15 mins. Drink to stay healthy in flu season.
