Watermelon is the ultimate fruit of the summer heat. It is a mystery of contrast: a hard, green, striped skin on the outside, hiding a bright red, sweet, and juicy heart on the inside. It teaches us about "Inner Joy"—how God places a deep sweetness within us that the world can't see from the outside, and about the "Life-giving Water" that refreshes us in the hottest deserts of life.

You can't see the sweetness of a watermelon from the outside; you have to cut it open and taste it. It reminds us that we must experience God's goodness for ourselves to know how sweet He is.
Ages 3–5: Can you find the "yellow belly" on the melon? That's where it was sleeping on the ground!
Ages 6–9: Look at the leaves. They look like green lace, don't they? Why are they so different from pumpkin leaves?
Ages 10–13: Why is it important to stop watering the melon right before we pick it? (Hint: Think about what happens if you add too much water to a glass of sweet juice).

Watermelon is the "Inner Joy." It reminds us that our true life is hidden with Christ. The outside world might see a plain green skin, but God sees the red, sweet heart. It also reminds us that God's provision is meant to refresh us in the "heat" of our trials, giving us the strength to keep going.
