The Narrative: Deep Winter is the season of "Dormancy." To the eye, everything looks dead, but underground, the roots are resting and storing energy. It is a time of silence, sleep, and dreaming. It teaches us about "Sabbath"—that we must stop our doing and striving to let God work in the deep, hidden places of our souls.
Rest: Learning that the world continues without our help.
Psalm 46:10
"Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Prayer for the Season:
"Lord of the Silence, help me to be still. Quiet my anxious thoughts. Let me rest in Your presence like a seed in the winter earth."
Foods: Sourdough Bread, Porridge, Hot Cocoa, Preserved Fruit.
Activity: Storytelling. Gather around the fire and tell the family stories/history.
Snow Walking: Go for a walk in the deep snow. Listen to the "crunch" and the silence of the woods.
The Question: "Why do trees lose their leaves? Is it because they are dying, or because they are smart? (Hint: Heavy snow on leaves would break the branches!)."
