EARLY SPRING

The Awakening & The Breaking of Ground

The Narrative: Early Spring is the season of "The Thaw." The hard ground softens, the ice melts, and life begins to stir in the dark. It is a time of messiness (mud) and preparation. It reminds us of Repentance—the breaking up of our hard hearts to receive the seed of the Gospel.

Spiritual Discipline

Examination: Just as we inspect the garden for winter damage, we examine our souls.

  • Practice 1: Fasting (clearing out the old leaven).
  • Practice 2: Confession (tilling the soil of the heart).

Scriptural Anchor

Hosea 10:12

"Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord."

Prayer for the Season:

"Lord, thaw the cold places in my heart. Break up the fallow ground within me, that I may be soft enough to receive Your Word."

EARLY SPRING

The Mud Season & The First Green

Signs in Creation

  • Light: Days are noticeably longer; light is pale and cool.
  • Flora: Snowdrops, Crocus, swelling buds on trees.
  • Fauna: Robins return; mud appears; frogs begin to sing.

Garden Tasks

  • Prune fruit trees (before they wake up).
  • Plant cold seeds: Peas, Spinach, Radish.
  • Turn the compost pile to wake it up.

Kitchen & Home

Foods: Bitter greens (Dandelion), Roots (stored), Eggs (chickens start laying again).

Activity: Spring Cleaning. Open the windows to let the fresh air blow out the dust of winter.

Family Tradition

The First Pea: Go out in the mud together and push the first pea seeds into the cold ground, trusting they will rise.

The Question: "Look at the mud. It looks messy, doesn't it? But why do seeds need the mud to grow instead of clean, dry sand?"
