EARLY WINTER

The Long Night & The Advent Hope

The Narrative: Early Winter is the season of "The Waiting." It is the darkest time of the year, leading up to the Solstice and Christmas. The world is silent and cold, but in the dark, we light a candle. It teaches us about "Hope"—trusting that the Light of the World is coming, even when we cannot yet see the dawn.

Spiritual Discipline

Waiting: Learning to sit in the quiet without rushing.

  • Practice 1: Advent Candles (lighting one each week).
  • Practice 2: Silence (turning off screens/noise).

Scriptural Anchor

Isaiah 9:2

"The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned."

Prayer for the Season:

"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. In the darkness of this winter, kindle the flame of hope in my heart. I wait for You."

EARLY WINTER

The Solstice & The Indoor Hearth

Signs in Creation

  • Light: The sun sets early (4 PM); the nights are long and starry.
  • Flora: Evergreens (Pine, Spruce) are the only color left.
  • Fauna: Owls calling; deer tracks in the snow.

Garden Tasks

  • Rest: The garden is asleep. Do not disturb the soil.
  • Planning: Order seed catalogs for next year.
  • Feeding: Put out suet and seeds for the winter birds.

Kitchen & Home

Foods: Dried Beans, Roasted Roots, Oranges, Spices (Cinnamon/Clove).

Activity: Wreath Making. Bring the "Evergreen" inside as a promise that life continues.

Family Tradition

The Advent Log: Drill 4 holes in a log. Place candles in them. Light them each Sunday to mark the journey toward the King.

The Question: "Why do we bring a Pine tree inside the house in winter? What does it remind us of when all the other trees are bare?"
