The Power of the Snip

"Every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit." — John 15:2
Mara watched her father walk through the tomato rows with a pair of silver shears.

*Snip.* A healthy-looking green branch fell to the ground.

*Snip.* Another one.

"Dad, stop!" Mara cried. "You're breaking the plants! They are growing so well, why are you cutting them?"

Her father looked up and wiped his brow. "Mara, look at the bottom of the plant. Do you see how crowded it is? The wind can't get through, and the sun can't reach the flowers. If we let the plant grow every direction it wants, it will be a giant bush with tiny, green marbles for fruit. But if we **Prune** it, we help it focus. We are telling the plant: 'Don't waste your energy on more leaves. Put your energy into the fruit!'"

Redirection of Life

In the summer, everything grows fast. Sometimes, it grows too fast! A Steward uses Discernment to see what is helpful and what is a distraction. Pruning isn't about being mean to the plant; it is about loving the plant enough to help it reach its potential.

The Steward's Logic Focus requires sacrifice. To have the best tomatoes, we must say "no" to the extra leaves.

The Garden Security Team

As you manage your garden, you will find tiny visitors. Some are "Thieves"—like the hornworm that eats your leaves in the night. But some are "Givers"—like the bee that carries pollen or the ladybug that hunts the aphids. A wise manager knows the difference. We protect our friends and remove the thieves to keep the city of the garden safe.

Air and Light

Plants need to breathe! When we cut the lower leaves that touch the ground, we are protecting the plant from "The Damp." Damp ground can bring diseases. By lifting the "skirt" of the plant, we let the fresh air blow through. Cleanliness is part of stewardship!
