The Scribe of the Soil

"Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." β€” Habakkuk 2:2
Mara opened her notebook. It was stained with a little bit of Wisconsin mud and a drop of tomato juice, but to her, it was the most important book in the house.

"June 12th," she wrote. "The first yellow flower appeared on the cherry tomato plant. The corn is now 3 feet tallβ€”it grew 5 inches since last Monday! It hasn't rained for three days, so I gave Bed #2 an extra drink this morning."

Her little brother Eli looked over her shoulder. "Why are you writing all that down, Mara? We can just see it!"

Mara looked at the sunflower. "Because next year, Eli, I might forget when the first flower came. If I write it down, I can see the patterns. I can see how God works in the rain and the sun. My journal helps me tell the truth about the garden."

The Witness of Numbers

In the Skills stage, we learn to be Scribes. A Scribe is a witness to the truth. By using a yardstick to measure growth and a rain gauge to measure water, we are listening to what the land is telling us. Numbers are a language God uses to show us His order. When we record data, we are honoring the small details of His creation.

The Scribe's Truth We record the truth not just to remember, but to Observe. When you write, you see things you never noticed before.

The Map of Miracles

Your growth journal is a map of miracles. It tracks the journey of a tiny seed as it becomes a tall stalk of corn. It records the first time a bee lands on a flower. It notices when a plant is hungry for more compost. By keeping a faithful record, you are showing God that you care about every single inch of the land He has given you to steward.

Yield: The Math of Generosity

We use our journals to predict the harvest! If we know how many plants we have, and we know how much they usually produce, we can plan our generosity. "Next month," the journal tells us, "we will have enough peas to share with the family down the road." Math helps us turn our labor into a gift for others.
