Unit 1: Naming

"Learning the Language of Quantity"

Welcome to the Garden.

In the beginning, God brought the animals to Adam. He brought the lion, the eagle, and the sheep. He waited to see what Adam would call them.

Adam looked at the lion—its golden fur, its mighty roar—and he said, "Lion." He gave it a name that matched what it was.

In this book, you are going to do the same thing. But you are not naming animals. You are naming Amounts. When you see three stars in the sky, you will learn to say the name "Three." When you see a pair of shoes, you will say "Two."

Math is simply the language we use to name the amount of stuff God has made.

"And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof." Genesis 2:19

Why Names Matter

Have you ever been called by the wrong name? Maybe someone called you "Sarah" when your name is "Emma." It feels strange, doesn't it? Names matter. They tell the truth about who we are.

Numbers are the same way. When you see four apples and call them "Five," you have told a lie about the apples. You have called them by the wrong name! In math, we always want to tell the truth. We want to look at a group of things and give them the right name.

This is holy work. God Himself is a God of truth. He never lies. When we learn to name amounts correctly, we are practicing being like Him.

Lesson 1.1: The First Ten

"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names." Psalm 147:4
The Big Idea Just as the alphabet has 26 letters to write every word, math has only Ten Digits to write every number in the universe.

The Alphabet of Math

Think about reading. You have 26 letters in the alphabet: A, B, C, D... all the way to Z. With those letters, you can write any word in the world: "Cat," "Dog," "Love," "God," "Hippopotamus."

Math has an alphabet too. But here is the amazing secret: it is much, much smaller! There are only Ten Symbols in the whole universe of math. We call them Digits.

The word "digit" comes from an old Latin word that means "finger." And guess what? You have exactly ten fingers! This is not an accident. God designed your hands to be the perfect counting tool.

Meet the Digits

Here they are—the ten symbols that can write any number, from the number of toes on your feet to the number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy:

That's it! Just ten friends. Learn their names, learn their faces, and you can read any number in the entire world.

The Shape of the Numbers

Each digit has a special shape. These shapes are not random—they were designed by people long ago to be easy to write and easy to remember. Let's meet each one and learn a little picture to help us remember what they look like.

One is a Soldier

He stands straight and tall, at attention. He is first in line. He never leans or wobbles. When you write a 1, make him proud and straight like a soldier standing guard.

Two is a Swan

Look at her curved neck as she floats on the water. Her head curves around at the top, her neck bends gracefully, and her body makes a flat line at the bottom where she sits on the pond.

Three is a Butterfly

She has two wings—one on top and one on the bottom. Both wings curve to the right, as if she is about to fly away. Some people say Three looks like a sideways letter "E" with round bumps instead of straight lines.

Four is a Sailboat

He has a tall mast going up and down, and a diagonal sail catching the wind. The little line across is like the boom holding the sail in place. Four is ready to sail across the sea of numbers!

Five is a Hungry Man

He has a flat cap on top of his head (the horizontal line), a straight neck going down, and a big, round belly at the bottom! He ate too much dinner. Five starts at the top right, goes left, drops down, then curves around his tummy.

Six is a Snail

He has a curly shell at the bottom where he hides, and a little neck reaching up at the top. When you write a 6, start at the top and curl all the way around into the shell. The snail is curled up tight, resting after a long journey.

Seven is a Signpost

He stands on one leg and points the way forward. The flat line at the top is like an arrow pointing to the right, and the diagonal line is the post holding it up. Seven says, "This way to the next number!"

Eight is a Snowman

One snowball stacked on top of another! The top circle is his head, and the bottom circle is his body. When you write an 8, you can make one big curvy "S" shape, or you can draw two circles stacked together. Either way, he looks like a friendly snowman.

Nine is a Balloon

A round circle floats high in the air, tied to a string that hangs down. The circle is the balloon, and the line is the string you hold so it doesn't fly away. Nine looks like an upside-down 6—the snail flipped over and became a balloon!

0

Zero is an Empty Egg

It is round and smooth, with nothing inside. The shell is there, but the egg is hollow. Zero is the number that tells us "nothing is here." We will learn much more about this special number in the next lesson!

The Digit Song

One stands tall like a soldier proud,
Two's a swan upon the water bowed,
Three's a butterfly with wings so free,
Four's a sailboat on the sea!

Five's a man with a belly round,
Six's a snail curled on the ground,
Seven points the way to go,
Eight's a snowman made of snow!

Nine's a balloon up in the air,
Zero's an egg with nothing there.
Ten little digits, that's all we need,
To count every number, yes indeed!

Your Built-In Calculator

God gave you a calculator that you can never lose. You can't leave it at home. You can't forget to charge it. Look at your hands. Wiggle your fingers.

How many fingers do you have? Ten.

This is why we have exactly ten digits! People all over the world—in China, in Africa, in South America—all have ten fingers. So we all agreed to use ten symbols for our numbers. Your hands are always with you, ready to help you count.

Hold up your hands. Touch each finger one at a time as you say the digit names: "Zero, One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine." (We start with Zero because we can show "no fingers" by making two fists!)

Did You Know?
The word "digit" means both "finger" and "number symbol." When someone talks about a "two-digit number" like 42, they mean a number that uses two symbols. When a doctor talks about your "digits," they mean your fingers and toes! Same word, two meanings—both connected to counting.

Lesson 1.2: The Zero

The Big Idea Zero is the number that names Nothing. It is one of the most important numbers ever invented.

The Discovery of Nothing

Hold out your hands. Cup them together like a bowl. Now, tell me... what is in your hands?

Nothing.

In English, we say the word "Nothing." But in Math, we have a number for nothing. It is called Zero.

Some people think Zero is not a "real" number. They think it doesn't count because it doesn't stand for anything. But they are wrong! Zero is one of the most important numbers of all.

Parent How many elephants are in our kitchen right now?
Child None! There aren't any elephants.
Parent That's right. And in math, we have a way to write "none." We write: 0

Why Zero Matters

Imagine if you had no way to say "I have no apples." What would you do? You would just have to be silent. But silence doesn't tell the truth—it leaves the question unanswered!

Zero lets us tell the truth about what is not there. It completes our language. Without Zero, we would have a hole in our number vocabulary.

The Shape of Empty

Look at the shape of 0. What does it look like to you?

The round, hollow shape of Zero reminds us that it means "empty" or "none."

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void." Genesis 1:1-2

God Created from Nothing

The Bible tells us that God created the world ex nihilo—that is Latin for "Out of Nothing."

Before the stars, before the sun, before the mountains and the oceans... there was Zero things. Nothing existed except God Himself.

Then God spoke. He said, "Let there be light." And suddenly, there was One thing—light! The numbers began. Creation had started.

Zero is the silence before the song. It is the blank page before the story. It is the darkness before God said "Light!" And then the counting begins: 1, 2, 3...

Zero is a Placeholder

Zero has another very important job. It holds a place when a spot is empty.

Look at the number 10. What do you see?

Without the Zero, we would just write "1." But "1" means something different than "10"! The Zero holds the place so we know the 1 is in the "tens" spot, not the "ones" spot.

These are NOT the same! Zero makes all the difference.

Think about a hotel with numbered rooms. Room 1 is on the first floor. Room 10 is on the first floor too, but it's the tenth room! Room 101 is on a different floor entirely. The zeros tell us which floor and which room we're talking about.

Look around the room. Can you find something you have zero of? Maybe you have zero elephants, zero dinosaurs, or zero rockets. Practice saying, "I have zero ___."

Fun Fact
Zero was not always part of math! Ancient Romans had no symbol for zero. They used letters like I, V, X for their numbers. It wasn't until about 1,500 years ago that mathematicians in India invented the zero. It was one of the greatest discoveries in history!

Lesson 1.3: The Teens

The Big Idea When we run out of single digits, we don't need new symbols. We combine the digits we already have using Bundles.

Running Out of Fingers

We have learned the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Count them—that's ten symbols!

But what happens when we find one more thing after nine?

We run out of single digits! There is no special symbol for "ten." We don't have an eleventh finger to invent an eleventh digit.

So what do we do? We do something brilliant. We make a Bundle.

The Bundle Strategy

Imagine you are collecting sticks in the forest. You find one stick... two sticks... three sticks... You keep picking them up: four, five, six, seven, eight, nine sticks!

Now you find one more stick. You have ten sticks total. But they are loose and messy. They fall out of your arms. They poke you. It is hard to carry them!

So you take a piece of string and tie all ten sticks together. Now you have One Bundle.

10 loose sticks become 1 neat bundle!

Do you still have ten sticks? Yes! You didn't lose any. But now they act like One Thing. You have One Bundle of Ten.

This is how we write the number 10:

Parent Look at the number 10. How many bundles do you see?
Child One bundle! The 1 tells me.
Parent And how many loose ones are left over?
Child Zero! The 0 tells me the ones place is empty.

The Teen Family

The numbers that come after 10 are called the Teens. They are just a Bundle of Ten plus some extra friends who didn't fit in the bundle.

11 = 1 Bundle + 1 loose stick (Eleven)
12 = 1 Bundle + 2 loose sticks (Twelve)
13 = 1 Bundle + 3 loose sticks (Thir-teen)
14 = 1 Bundle + 4 loose sticks (Four-teen)
15 = 1 Bundle + 5 loose sticks (Fif-teen)
16 = 1 Bundle + 6 loose sticks (Six-teen)
17 = 1 Bundle + 7 loose sticks (Seven-teen)
18 = 1 Bundle + 8 loose sticks (Eigh-teen)
19 = 1 Bundle + 9 loose sticks (Nine-teen)

The Secret in the Name

Listen carefully to the names of these numbers. Do you hear something hiding inside?

Four-TEEN. Fif-TEEN. Six-TEEN.

The word "teen" sounds like "ten!" When you hear "teen," think "ten." These numbers are telling you: "I have a ten inside me!"

The Tricky Ones: Eleven and Twelve

The numbers 11 and 12 are a little sneaky. Their names don't follow the pattern!

Eleven doesn't sound like "One-teen." And Twelve doesn't sound like "Two-teen."

These are very old words from languages spoken long, long ago. People were still figuring out how to talk about numbers! Just memorize these two special names:

After 12, the pattern begins: Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen... and so on.

Get 15 small objects (like beans, buttons, or LEGO bricks). Count out 10 and put them in a pile—this is your "bundle." Now count the loose ones left over. How many? That's right—5! You have 1 bundle and 5 ones. That's 15!

What Comes After 19?

After 19, something exciting happens. You have one bundle... and 9 loose ones. What if you find one more?

Now you have 10 loose ones. But wait—that's enough for a new bundle!

So you tie up those 10 loose ones into a second bundle. Now you have:

We write this as 20. The 2 means "two bundles." The 0 means "zero loose ones."

We call this number Twenty. And the pattern continues: 21, 22, 23... all the way up!

The Big Secret of Math
We never need more than ten digits (0-9). Every time we get ten of something, we bundle it up and move to the next place. This is called the Base-Ten System, and it's the foundation of all the math you will ever learn!

Lesson 1.4: Writing Numbers

The Big Idea When you write a number, you are drawing a picture of the truth. Careful handwriting tells the truth clearly.

Drawing the Truth

When you write a number, you are making a picture that tells someone the truth about an amount.

What if you wrote a sloppy "5" that looked like a "3"? Someone might read your number and think you meant three, not five. You would have told a lie about the amount—not on purpose, but because your picture wasn't clear!

We want to be truth-tellers. We want our numbers to be clear and easy to read. This takes practice, but it is worth the effort.

The Golden Rule: Start at the Top

Here is the secret to good number handwriting: Almost every number starts at the top.

Just like rain falls from the sky to the ground, your pencil should start high and move down. This makes your numbers neat and consistent.

How to Write Each Digit

Writing 1 (The Soldier)

Start at the top. Pull straight down to the bottom. Done! The simplest number to write.

↓ Start at the sky, pull down to the ground.

Writing 2 (The Swan)

Start at the top left. Curve up and around to the right (like the swan's head). Swoop down to the left. Then make a flat line across the bottom (the water).

Writing 3 (The Butterfly)

Start at the top left. Curve around to make the top wing. Come back to the middle. Curve around again to make the bottom wing.

Writing 4 (The Sailboat)

Start at the top. Go down partway. Stop! Now go across to the right. Lift your pencil. Start at the top right and pull straight down through the crossbar to the bottom.

Writing 5 (The Hungry Man)

Start at the top right. Go LEFT to make his flat cap. Then go DOWN for his neck. Now curve around to the right to make his big belly. 5 is the trickiest number because he goes left first!

Writing 6 (The Snail)

Start at the top right. Curve down and around, all the way into a spiral at the bottom. You're drawing the snail curling into his shell.

Writing 7 (The Signpost)

Start at the top left. Go straight across to the right. Now go diagonally down to the left. Some people add a little line across the middle (like European style), but you don't have to.

Writing 8 (The Snowman)

Start in the middle. Curve up and around for the head (top circle). Keep going and curve down and around for the body (bottom circle). It's like drawing an "S" that connects to itself!

Writing 9 (The Balloon)

Start near the top right. Curve around to make the balloon (a circle). Then pull the string straight down.

Writing 0 (The Empty Egg)

Start at the top. Curve around to the left, down, around to the right, and back up to where you started. You're drawing an oval or egg shape.

Practice writing each digit five times. Say the number's name out loud as you write it. Go slowly! Speed will come later. Right now, focus on making each number clear and beautiful.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Lesson 1.5: Number Words

The Big Idea Every number has two names: a digit (its face) and a word (its spoken name). They mean the same thing.

Two Names for the Same Thing

You have a name that people say out loud (like "Emma" or "James"). You also have a face that people recognize when they see you.

Numbers are the same way!

  1. The Digit is the face: 5
  2. The Word is the name: Five

They mean exactly the same thing. One is for writing quickly in math problems. One is for writing in stories and sentences.

When to Use Which

In math problems, we usually use the digit because it is faster to write:

3 + 4 = 7

In stories and sentences, we often use the word:

"Sarah has three apples and four oranges. She has seven pieces of fruit altogether."

You need to be able to read both! When you see "7" in a math problem, your brain should hear "seven." When you read "seven" in a story, your brain should picture the digit 7.

Tricky Spellings

Some number words are tricky to spell. Here are the ones that trip people up:

Practice matching! Have someone say a number word ("seven") and you write the digit (7). Then switch—they show you a digit, and you say the word. Go back and forth until it feels automatic!

The Teen Words

The teen numbers have their own word patterns:

11 Eleven (Special word—memorize it!)
12 Twelve (Special word—memorize it!)
13 Thirteen Three + Ten
14 Fourteen Four + Ten
15 Fifteen Five + Ten
16 Sixteen Six + Ten
17 Seventeen Seven + Ten
18 Eighteen Eight + Ten
19 Nineteen Nine + Ten

Notice that 13 and 15 have slightly different spellings: "thir-teen" (not "three-teen") and "fif-teen" (not "five-teen"). These are old forms of the words that have stuck around!

Reading Numbers in the Wild

Numbers are everywhere! You will see them on:

Every time you see a number, practice saying its name in your head. This will make you a fast and confident number reader!

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." Psalm 90:12

Even the Bible talks about numbering! Numbers help us understand our lives—how old we are, what day it is, how much time we have. Learning to name amounts is one of the first steps toward wisdom.

Math has only ten digits (0-9), just like you have ten fingers. With these ten symbols, you can write any number in the universe!
