"The Art of Attention"
God Does Not Estimate.
When God looks at the world, He sees everything clearly. He does not say, "Oh, there is a bunch of sand on the beach." He knows every single grain.
He does not say, "You have a lot of hair." The Bible tells us something amazing: "Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered." (Luke 12:7).
Think about that! God has counted every hair on your head. He didn't guess. He didn't say "about a thousand." He knows the exact number. That is how carefully God pays attention to His creation.
Counting is how we pay attention to the world God made. When we count something, we are saying, "You matter. You are not just a blur. You are here, and I see you."
In this Unit, we will learn to count with the precision of a King.
In Unit 1, you learned the names of numbers. You met the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. You learned how to write them and say them.
But knowing the names is only the beginning. Now we need to learn how to use those names to answer the most important question in math:
"How many?"
Counting is the bridge between the world of things and the world of numbers. When you count, you are taking real objects—apples, stars, toes, cookies—and finding out which number name belongs to them.
Imagine you are setting the table for dinner. You need to put out plates. But how many? If you don't count the people, you might put out too many plates (and waste dishes) or too few plates (and someone has no plate!).

Imagine you have a plate of cookies. You want to know how many there are. You start counting: "One, Two, Three..."
But wait! Your mouth said "Two" while your finger was still touching the first cookie. Or maybe your finger skipped a cookie entirely because you were going too fast. Or maybe you counted the same cookie twice!
If your finger and your mouth don't work together, you will get the wrong answer. You will tell a lie about the cookies—not on purpose, but because you weren't careful.
Think of counting like meeting people at a party. You don't just wave at the whole room and say "Hello everyone!" at once. That would be rude! Instead, you walk up to each person, shake their hand, and say their name.
Counting works the same way. Each object deserves its own moment. Each object gets its own number.
One Touch. One Name.
You cannot say "Two" until your finger has moved to the second item. You cannot say "Three" until you have touched the third item. Be polite to the objects. Give each one its turn.
Here is how to count correctly:
Each star gets exactly one number. No star is skipped. No star is counted twice.
The biggest mistake young counters make is going too fast. They want to race through the numbers like it's a competition. But counting is not about speed—it's about accuracy.
A slow, correct count is worth far more than a fast, wrong count.
Imagine you are a banker counting money. Would you rather have a banker who counts quickly but loses track and gives you the wrong amount? Or a banker who counts slowly and carefully and gets it exactly right?
Be the careful banker. Slow down. Touch each item. Say each number. Get it right.
Sometimes it's hard to remember which objects you've already counted, especially if they're scattered around. Here are some tricks:
Gather a handful of small objects (beans, buttons, coins, or toys). Scatter them on the table. Now count them slowly, touching each one as you say its number. When you're done, move them into a row and count again. Did you get the same answer both times?
Your pointing finger is your most important counting tool. It creates a connection between your eye (which sees the object), your hand (which touches the object), and your mouth (which says the number).
When all three work together—see, touch, say—you will never make a mistake.

The three parts of counting must happen together, in harmony.
God gave you eyes to see, ears to hear, and hands to touch. When you count carefully, you are using the wonderful gifts God gave you to understand His world.
Let's say you count a pile of blocks: "One... Two... Three... Four... Five."
You stop at Five. Now, here is an important question: Does the name "Five" belong only to that last block you touched?
No!
"Five" is the name of the Whole Pile. It tells you how many blocks there are altogether.
= 5 blocks
The last number (5) names the entire collection, not just the last block.
Imagine the number 5 is like a big blanket. When you finish counting, that blanket floats down and covers all the blocks together.
If someone walks into the room and asks, "How many blocks do you have?" you don't have to count them again. You just remember the blanket: "Five."
The last number "catches" all the previous numbers inside it. Five contains 1, 2, 3, and 4 within it. Five is the summary of the whole counting journey.
In mathematics, this idea has a special name: Cardinality.
Cardinality means that the counting numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) can transform into a total amount. When you count, you are doing two things at once:
The last number does both jobs at once. It is the tag for the final object AND the answer to "how many?"
When counting a set of objects, the last number spoken represents the total quantity of objects in the set.
Sometimes children learn to count by rote (just saying the numbers in order) without understanding that the last number means something special. Here's how to check:
If a child needs to recount every time they're asked "how many," they haven't fully grasped cardinality yet. That's okay! With practice, the understanding will come.
After every counting exercise, ask this magic question:
"How many?"
This trains the brain to remember that counting has a purpose. We don't count just to say numbers—we count to find out how many things there are.
Count a group of objects (like grapes or toy animals). When you finish, close your eyes. Now, without looking, answer: "How many?" Can you remember the last number? That's cardinality in action!
Here's something wonderful: it doesn't matter which object you start with. If you count a pile of 6 coins starting from the left, you get 6. If you count the same pile starting from the right, you still get 6!
The total stays the same no matter what order you count in. This is because the number belongs to the whole group, not to any particular object.
Count left to right: 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 → 6
Count right to left: 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 → 6
Count randomly: 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 🪙 → 6
Same coins, same total, no matter the order!
Just as God sees the truth of a person's heart no matter what they look like on the outside, the truth of "how many" stays the same no matter how we arrange or count the objects. The total is an unchanging fact about the group.
Imagine you are standing at the bottom of a staircase. Each step has a number painted on it.
You start at the bottom step: 1.
You take one step up: 2.
You take another step: 3.
Every time you say a new number, you are exactly one step higher than the number before. You are climbing the Number Staircase!
You probably already know the counting song by heart:
This song is burned into your memory. You can probably say it forward without even thinking. That's good! The counting sequence is one of the most important things you will ever memorize.
But let's think about what it means:
Here's a wonderful secret: when you count forward, you are already doing addition!
If you know that 6 comes after 5, you actually know that:
5 + 1 = 6
If you know that 10 comes after 9, you know that:
9 + 1 = 10
Every step up the staircase is adding one more. You are building a tower, one block at a time!
Another way to think about counting forward is to imagine a Number Line. It's like a road that stretches out in front of you, with numbers marked along the way.
When you count forward, you are walking to the right along this road. Each step takes you to the next number. The numbers get bigger and bigger as you go.
The amazing thing about the Number Line is that it never ends! No matter how far you walk, there is always another number waiting. You can count to 100, to 1000, to a million, and there's still more. God's numbers are infinite!
Once you've mastered counting to 20, keep going! Here's the pattern for the "decades":
Start at 1 and count as high as you can without making a mistake. Can you get to 20? To 50? To 100? Practice a little bit every day and watch your counting grow!
You don't always have to start at 1. A good counter can start anywhere!

This is called "counting on" and we'll learn more about it in Lesson 2.5. For now, just practice starting from different numbers and keep climbing that staircase!
Just as God's Word lights our path one step at a time, counting takes us forward one number at a time. We don't have to see the whole staircase at once. We just take the next step, and then the next, and then the next.
Imagine you are at Mission Control. A rocket is sitting on the launch pad, ready to blast off into space. The engineers begin the countdown:
BLAST OFF!
Each number is smaller than the one before. Each number is one step closer to the ground. The rocket waits... waits... waits... and then—BOOM!—it launches into the sky!
When you count forward, you're going with the flow. The numbers naturally pull you along: 1, 2, 3, 4... It's like sliding down a slide.
But when you count backward, you're going against the natural order. You have to think: "What number came before this one?" It's like climbing back UP the slide—it takes more effort!
This is why counting backward is such an important skill to practice. It builds your number sense and prepares you for subtraction.
When counting backward, think of walking down the Number Staircase:
Each step takes you to a smaller number. You are walking to the left on the Number Line. The numbers are shrinking, one at a time.
When you count down and reach Zero, you have arrived at the ground floor. You have nothing left.
Zero is the bottom of the counting staircase. You cannot step lower than Zero (at least not yet—you'll learn about negative numbers when you're older!).
When the rocket reaches Zero, it has counted down all the way. Time's up. The waiting is over. Action begins!
Let's practice some countdowns:
From 5: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0!
From 10: 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0!
From 20: 20... 19... 18... 17... 16... 15... 14... 13... 12... 11... 10... 9... 8... 7... 6... 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0!
Notice how the teens (19, 18, 17...) sound different going backward. Practice saying them out loud until they feel natural.
Just like counting forward is secret addition, counting backward is secret subtraction!
If you know that 7 comes before 8, you know that:
8 - 1 = 7
If you know that 0 comes before 1, you know that:
1 - 1 = 0
Every step down the staircase is taking away one. You are unbuilding the tower, one block at a time.
Practice the "Rocket Launch" countdown every day. Start at 10 and count down to 0, then shout "Blast off!" Once that's easy, try starting at 15, then 20. Can you count backward from 30 without making a mistake?
Just like counting forward, you should be able to count backward from any starting point:
This flexibility shows that you really understand how numbers work, not just how to recite them.
Just as there is a time to build up and a time to tear down, there is a time to count forward and a time to count backward. Both skills are important. Both tell the truth about numbers.
Let's say you have 5 pennies in your piggy bank. You know they are there. You counted them yesterday and you haven't touched them since.
Now Grandma visits and gives you 2 more pennies.
Do you have to dump out the whole bank and count from the beginning? "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7"?
No! That takes too long. And worse, it wastes the counting work you already did!

Here's what smart counters do:
You have 7 pennies total! You found the answer without dumping out the whole bank.
5 → 6 → 7
The 5 is "locked." We only count the new ones: six, seven. Answer: 7!
This strategy works because of a powerful principle called Conservation of Number.
Conservation means that a quantity stays the same unless you add to it or take away from it. The 5 pennies in your piggy bank don't magically change to 4 or 6 just because you looked away. They stay 5.
You can trust the number you already counted. It won't change on its own. This lets you build on what you already know instead of starting from scratch every time.
A quantity remains the same regardless of how the objects are arranged or whether you are looking at them. Five is five is five—until something is added or taken away.
Let's practice with some examples:
Example 1: You have 3 apples. You get 2 more. How many?
Lock the 3: 3 → 4 → 5
Answer: 5 apples
Example 2: You have 8 stickers. You get 3 more. How many?
Lock the 8: 8 → 9 → 10 → 11
Answer: 11 stickers
Example 3: You have 12 crayons. You get 4 more. How many?
Lock the 12: 12 → 13 → 14 → 15 → 16
Answer: 16 crayons
You can visualize counting on with a number line. Start at the locked number and hop forward:
Start at 8 (green = locked). Count on 3 more (orange = counted). Land on 11!
Counting on is useful whenever:
It's especially helpful when the first number is big. Would you rather count from 1 all the way to 25? Or would you rather lock the 20 you already know and just count on 5 more?
Here's a smart trick: when adding two numbers, always start with the bigger one and count on the smaller one.
If you need to add 2 + 7, don't lock the 2 and count on 7 (that's a lot of counting!). Instead, flip it around: lock the 7 and count on 2.
Slow way: 2 + 7 → Lock 2 → 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (7 hops!)
Fast way: 7 + 2 → Lock 7 → 8, 9 (only 2 hops!)
Same answer: 9
Both ways give you 9, but the second way is much faster. Smart counters always look for shortcuts!
Put 6 toys in a row. Count them and remember: "Six." Now close your eyes and have someone add some more toys. Open your eyes and COUNT ON from 6 to find the new total. How many are there now?
Your fingers can help you keep track of how many you've counted on. Here's how:
Your fingers track how many times you counted on. If you needed to add 3, you stop when 3 fingers are up!
8 + 3 = ?
"Eight..." (start)
"Nine" ☝️ (one finger)
"Ten" ✌️ (two fingers)
"Eleven" 🤟 (three fingers—stop!)
Answer: 11
Even Jesus talked about counting! When we plan and build, we need to know our numbers. Counting on helps us quickly find totals so we can make good decisions.
Lesson 2.1: One-to-One Correspondence
Counting is a handshake between your finger and each object. One touch, one number. Don't skip, don't double-count, and don't race. Slow and careful wins!
Lesson 2.2: The Last Number Rule (Cardinality)
The last number you say when counting is not just the name of the last object—it's the name of the WHOLE GROUP. It tells you the total. That's the answer to "How many?"
Lesson 2.3: Counting Forward
Counting forward is like climbing stairs. Each number is one step higher than the one before. This is secret addition: every step is +1!
Lesson 2.4: Counting Backward
Counting backward is like climbing down a ladder. It's harder because you have to remember what came before. This is secret subtraction: every step is -1!
Lesson 2.5: Counting On
You don't have to start at 1 every time. Lock a number in your brain and count on from there. This saves time and builds on what you already know!

Counting is the foundation of all math. Every addition problem, every subtraction problem, every multiplication and division—they all build on the counting skills you have mastered.
