Unit 5: Composing (10s)

"Many members, yet but one body." — 1 Corinthians 12:20

Lesson 5.1: The One and the Many

"Lord, You have made my body with many parts, yet I am one. Teach me to see how the small pieces of Your world fit together to make a glorious whole."
1. Decompose the Shape: Draw a line to split these wholes into two parts. Label the parts 'A' and 'B'.
2. Body Analysis: If your Body is the WHOLE, name three PARTS that belong to it.

Math-CRP: The Double-Count Repair

The Rupture: A student counts "1, 2" for the first part and then "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" for the second part (counting all items again).

The Fix: "Once a part moves into its own room, it can't be in the other room! Let's physically separate them. Move 2 blocks to the left. How many are left for the right? (3). Now count them. 2 and 3. Do not count the whole pile twice!"

Signet Challenge: The Tower Architect

Task: Build a tower of 4 blocks. Break it into two parts. Tell your mentor: 'The whole is 4. The parts are ___ and ___.'

Verification: Did you find both parts correctly? [ ] Yes

Echad Extension: The Broken Cookie

Mission: Break a cracker or cookie into two parts. Give one part to a sibling. Tell them: 'This was one whole, now it is two parts for us to share!'

Completed? [ ] Yes

Lesson 5.2: The Bond Map

"Lord, as I map these connections, help me to see the unity of Your design. Let my mind be clear to find the missing pieces and to honor the boss of the family."
1. Fill the Hug: One circle is empty. Use your logic to find the missing number. Remember: The biggest number is the WHOLE.

2. Draw the Bond: Look at 2 and 1. Draw a Number Bond to show they COMPOSE 3.
Math-CRP: The Circle Repair

The Rupture: A student puts the largest number in a bottom circle instead of the top 'Whole' circle.

The Fix: "Wait! The 'Whole' is the Captain. The Captain must sit in the circle with TWO arms reaching out. He is the one who holds everyone together. Does a tiny part hold the Captain? No! The Captain holds the parts. Let's move the big number to the Captain's chair."

Signet Challenge: The Bond Master

Task: Your mentor will give you a Whole (e.g., 6) and one Part (e.g., 2). You must find the missing Part using blocks and say the name correctly.

Verification: 6 is 2 and . Did you find it? [ ] Yes

Echad Extension: The Secret Bond

Mission: Draw a Number Bond on a piece of paper. Hide one part with your hand. Ask a sibling or parent to guess who is hiding in the empty circle!

Completed? [ ] Yes

Lesson 5.3: The Friends of Ten

"Lord, thank You for the Covenant of Ten. Help me to learn these perfect pairs so that I may always find my way back to the safety of Your order."
1. The Rainbow Match: Draw lines to connect the 'Soulmates' that make TEN. Every number has a friend!

2. Ten-Frame Truth: How many more to make Ten? Fill the empty seats with dots and write the equation.

6 + = 10

3 + = 10

9 + = 10

5 + = 10

3. The Covenant Rainbow: Draw the arches of the rainbow to connect the friends of ten. Use a different color for each pair!

(Draw arches connecting 0-10, 1-9, 2-8, 3-7, 4-6)

Math-CRP: The Rainbow Repair

The Rupture: A student says "7 and 4 make 10."

The Fix: "Let's check the bus! Put 7 dots on your Ten-Frame. How many empty seats are left? (3). Does 4 fit in 3 seats? No! It would be too many. So 7's true friend is 3. Write the correct pair."

7 and make 10.

Signet Challenge: The Gatekeeper

Task: Have your mentor shout a number from 0 to 10. You must shout back the number that makes 10 instantly.

Verification: 8 ➔   1 ➔   5 ➔

Echad Extension: Go Fish for Ten

Mission: Get a deck of cards (Ace-9). Play a game with a sibling. Instead of matching pairs, you must match pairs that add up to 10 (like 6 and 4)!

Completed? [ ] Yes

Lesson 5.4: Gathering into One

"Lord, thank You for the power of gathering. Help me to see how Your small blessings come together to make a strong and unified Ten."
1. The Plus Connector: Composing is adding parts together. Write the total for these 'Soulmate' pairs.
7 + 3 =
5 + 5 =
9 + 1 =
8 + 2 =
6 + 4 =
10 + 0 =
4 + 6 =
3 + 7 =
2. Draw the Composition: Draw 4 circles and 6 squares. Circle them all to show they make one TEN. Give them a 'big hug' with your circle!
3. The Pantry Audit: We have 7 boxes of cereal and 3 cans of soup. How many items do we have in our 'Pantry Bundle'?

7 + 3 =

Math-CRP: The Loose Ten Repair

The Rupture: A student counts to 10 but refuses to 'bundle' the sticks or circles, leaving them scattered.

The Fix: "Wait! A Ten is a family. If they stay loose, they aren't a Ten yet—they are just ten lonely ones. To become a Ten, they must be bundled. Draw a tight rubber band around your 10 dots to finish the work."

Signet Challenge: The Bricklayer

Task: Get two piles of LEGOs or blocks (e.g., 7 and 3). Combine them into a single strong tower. Show it to your mentor.

Verification: Is the tower 10 blocks high? [ ] Yes

Echad Extension: The Cleanup Crew

Mission: When cleaning up your toys, try to 'compose' them into groups of 10. Put 10 cars in one box. Put 10 blocks in one bag. Tell a sibling: 'I'm making bundles!'

Completed? [ ] Yes

Lesson 5.5: Sharing the Whole

"Lord, thank You for the grace of decomposition. Teach me to break my 'Whole' so that I may meet the 'Part' needed by my neighbor. Let my math be an act of generosity."
1. Breaking the Ten: If you have a Ten and you give away a part, what is left in your hand?
I have 10. I give 4. I have left.
I have 10. I give 7. I have left.
I have 10. I give 1. I have left.
I have 10. I give 5. I have left.
I have 10. I give 8. I have left.
I have 10. I give 10. I have left.
2. The Bread Breaker: Draw a loaf of bread (a long rectangle). Break it into 10 pieces. Cross out 3 pieces to share. How many are left for you?

10 - 3 =

3. Shared Purse Logic: Why do we decompose (break) a ten?

So we can share/give with others.

Math-CRP: The Lost Remainder Repair

The Rupture: A student gives away a part but forgets to count what is left, thinking the rest of the Ten has vanished.

The Fix: "Wait! The Ten didn't disappear—it just split. If you give 2 away, the other 8 are still here. They are just in a different pile. Count your leftovers to restore the truth of the Whole."

Signet Challenge: The Blessing Bundle

Task: Gather 10 small snacks (pretzels or grapes). Decompose the Ten into two piles: One for you and one for your mentor. Tell them the numbers!

Verification: Mentor check: [ ] Passed

Echad Extension: The Shared Snack

Mission: Explain to a friend or sibling: 'I had ten, but I broke it to give you some! Now we both have a part.' Show them the math sentence.

Completed? [ ] Yes

Unit 5 Summary: Signet Graduation

C.A.M.E. Verification Node: The Truth of Echad

A student sees a Number Bond with 10 in the whole circle. The parts are 5 and 4.

Is the student telling the Truth? Count 5 and 4 on your fingers. Do they compose 10? What is the correct "Friend of Ten" for the number 5? Use the word 'Justice' or 'Fairness' in your explanation.

Verdict:

The Signet Vow of the Builder

"I, a young Builder of Unity, promise to see the parts that make the whole. I will honor the connections between numbers, knowing that just as many members make one body, many parts make one Ten. I will use my skill to build and to share, for God is the author of unity and peace."
