Unit 5: Composing (Re-grouping)

"...that there shall not be room enough to receive it." — Malachi 3:10

The Scribe's Vocabulary Bank

Composing: Taking loose pieces and putting them together into a whole. (10 Ones $\to$ 1 Ten).

Overflow: When you have more than 9 ones in the cottage. The net starts to break!

Trade: Giving 10 loose ones to the bank and getting 1 bundle in return.

The Attic: The small room at the top of the Tens mansion where the "Guest" lives.

Carry: The action of moving the Guest from the overflow into the Attic.

Algorithm: A sacred sequence of steps that always leads to the Truth.

Discernment: Knowing when a problem needs a trade and when it doesn't.

Lesson 5.1: No Room in the Inn (The Overflow)

Scribe's Hint: Remember the Law of the Chair! Only one digit can sit in each place value chair. If your ones add up to 10 or more, you must BUNDLE them and move the Ten to the Mansion!

Part 1: The Breaking Point
Does the net break? Circle YES if the ones need to be bundled (10 or more).

1. 8 ones + 4 ones = 12. Needs bundle? [ YES / NO ]
2. 5 ones + 3 ones = 8. Needs bundle? [ YES / NO ]
3. 9 ones + 1 one = 10. Needs bundle? [ YES / NO ]
4. 7 ones + 7 ones = 14. Needs bundle? [ YES / NO ]
5. 2 ones + 6 ones = 8. Needs bundle? [ YES / NO ]

Part 2: The Trade Agreement
If you have these ones, how many stay in the cottage and how many bundles go to the mansion?

6. Total: 13. Cottage: [ ] Mansion: [ 1 ]
7. Total: 15. Cottage: [ ] Mansion: [ 1 ]
8. Total: 10. Cottage: [ ] Mansion: [ 1 ]
9. Total: 18. Cottage: [ ] Mansion: [ 1 ]
10. Logic Check: Can the digit 10 live in the Ones Cottage? (Yes/No)

Verification Node: The Cramming Rupture

Scenario: A scribe adds $9 + 5$ and writes the whole "14" in the ones column.

The Rupture: Why is the "1" in 14 uncomfortable in the Ones Cottage? Where should he go to find his proper family? Explain the "One Digit Rule."

Signet Challenge: Show your mentor how to turn 10 loose coins into 1 bundle. Explain the "Trade."

Lesson 5.2: The Attic Guest (Carrying)

Scribe's Hint: When you carry a Ten to the Mansion, don't just hide it! Put it in the Attic Box at the very top. Add the Guest FIRST so he doesn't get left out of the party!

Part 1: Inviting the Guest
Add the ones. If they overflow, write the carried 1 in the attic box.

Part 2: Vertical Stewardship
Write these problems vertically and solve by carrying the Guest.

5. $17 + 5 =$ ____
6. $28 + 3 =$ ____
7. $45 + 9 =$ ____
8. In $15 + 7$, what digit stays in the ones cottage?
9. In $15 + 7$, what digit goes to the attic?
10. Master Check: Do you add the attic guest FIRST or LAST?

Verification Node: The Forgotten Guest

Truth: The carried Ten is an Honored Guest. If we forget to add him, our sum will be too small by 10! It is like forgetting to feed a visitor at your table.

Task: Explain why $25 + 7$ is 32, and not 22.

Lesson 5.3: 2-Digit + 2-Digit (The Gathering)

Scribe's Hint: This is the summit! We are adding two families together. Follow the recipe: 1. Add ones. 2. Trade if needed. 3. Carry the Guest. 4. Add the mansion Tens. 5. Celebrate!

Part 1: The Master Recipe
Solve these problems by following every step of the algorithm.

Part 2: Scribe's Dictation
Write these problems vertically and solve.

7. $34 + 29 =$ ____
8. $52 + 18 =$ ____
9. $11 + 79 =$ ____
10. Master Check: If the attic is 1, and the house has 4 and 2, what is the total of tens?

Lesson 5.4: To Carry or Not to Carry?

Scribe's Hint: A wise Scribe has Discernment. Check the Cottage first! If the ones are happy (9 or less), the attic window stays dark.

Part 1: The Judge's Test
Circle the problems that NEED a Guest in the Attic.

1. $12 + 15$ [ ]
2. $18 + 15$ [ ]
3. $44 + 44$ [ ]
4. $44 + 46$ [ ]
5. $21 + 32$ [ ]
6. $21 + 39$ [ ]

Part 2: Quick Discernment
Solve these mentally. Did you carry? Write YES or NO.

7. $10 + 10 =$ ____ Carry? ____
8. $19 + 11 =$ ____ Carry? ____
9. $25 + 25 =$ ____ Carry? ____
10. Logic Check: Why don't we carry for $14 + 14$?

Lesson 5.5: Shared Purse Abundance (The Feast)

Scribe's Hint: Every "one" is a fragment that matters. When you add them together, you are being a good steward of God's provision. Nothing is lost when it is orderly!

Part 1: The Gathering of Fragments
Solve these story problems using your Scribe skills.

1. Peter caught 15 fish. John caught 18 fish. How many total?
2. There are 24 small chairs and 19 large chairs. Total?
3. We have 36 barley loaves and 14 wheat loaves. Total?
4. Family A brings 25 coins. Family B brings 25 coins. Total?
5. Mental Tally: $15 + 15 = $ ____
6. Mental Tally: $18 + 12 = $ ____
7. Mental Tally: $27 + 13 = $ ____
8. Scribe's Wisdom: If you add $19 + 11$, what happens in the attic?
9. What is $99 + 1$? (Carry to the Mansion, then Carry to the Temple!)
10. Final Report: Which Edition of HavenHub Math have you just finished?

Parent Mentor Guide: The Summit of Edition 2

The Goal: The student should now be able to handle "Complex Addition" (Regrouping) with confidence. This unit connects all previous logic: Place Value, Making Ten, and Vertical Alignment.

Key Habits to Watch:

Closing the Edition: Celebrate this achievement! Your child has built the logical engine that will power all their future math. They are ready for the fast increase of Edition 3: Multiplication!

The Master Builder's Final Vow

"I, ____________________________, a Master Builder of the Kingdom, promise to steward every number with order and truth. I have learned to transform the overflow and honor the guest. I will use my mind to build great things for my King. Hallelujah!"
