"The Music of Skip Counting and the Master Map"

You have learned how to build groups and follow laws. You are becoming a great mathematician!
But did you know that math is also a Song? Everything God made has a rhythm. Your heart has a beat. The ocean has tides. Even the numbers have a dance!
In Unit 5, we are going to learn how to hear the music in the numbers. We will learn how to "Skip" across the number line like we are playing a game of hopscotch. This is called Skip Counting, and it is the fastest way to multiply in the world.

Have you ever noticed that God's world has a steady beat? The tides go in and out. Your heart beats in a steady rhythm. The seasons arrive exactly when they are supposed to. The sun rises and sets with perfect timing.
In the Bible, we read: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1). God is a God of rhythm. He didn't just make a pile of random moments; He made a song of time and space.
Math has a rhythm too! We call it Skip Counting. It is like finding the secret song inside the number line. When you skip count, you are actually reciting the multiplication tables without even trying. It is the music of numbers.
In this Unit, we will learn the four great songs of the harvester—the rhythms that help us count abundance at high speed! We will learn to march by 2s, high-five by 5s, chant by 10s, and waltz by 3s. And then, we will see how all these songs come together to make the Master Map.
Rhythm is a sign of Faithfulness. God is faithful to bring the morning every day. When we learn the rhythms of math, we are learning to trust that the world works in a certain way because God promised it would. Math is one way we see His promise kept.
In a small garden beneath a giant oak tree, a colony of ants was preparing for the Great Winter. The Queen had given a special command: "We must carry the seeds into the tunnels, but we must never walk alone. To stay safe, we march in Pairs!"
So, the ants lined up two by two. The first pair marched past the guard. "Two!" shouted the guard. The second pair marched past. "Four!" The third pair. "Six!"
A little ant named Pip was confused. "Why don't we count 1, 2, 3?" he asked.
"Because that's too slow!" answered the guard. "When we count by 2s, we reach the total twice as fast! And besides, Pip, two are better than one. If one ant slips on a pebble, the other is there to help."
Pip smiled and linked legs with his friend. Together, they marched into the dark tunnel. "Twenty-two! Twenty-four!" sang the colony. They were safe, they were together, and they were fast.
Look at your own feet. God gave you two of them! Left, Right. Left, Right. Every time you finish a full step (two feet moved), you have counted another pair.
If you want to remember the 2s count forever, sing them to the tune of a simple march! Clap on every number:
"Two, four, six, and eight... ten, twelve, fourteen... sixteen, eighteen, twenty... and we're feeling great!"
God made your voice to carry the numbers. When you sing them, they move from your head to your heart.

We call these the Even Numbers. They are called "even" because they are balanced. Every one has a partner. There are no "lonely ones" left over.
Go look at your shoes. They aren't just sitting in a big pile (hopefully!). They are in pairs. If you have 5 pairs of shoes, you can count them by ones (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10) or you can march them by 2s (2, 4, 6, 8, 10).
When an architect builds a tall building, they don't just put one pillar in the corner. They put them in Pairs. ($1 \times 2 = 2$).
If the building has 10 corners, they need 10 pairs. ($10 \times 2 = 20$). They use the rhythm of the 2s to make sure the building is balanced. If they have an "odd" number of pillars, the building might lean! God's world is balanced on the rhythm of the pair.
God loves partnership. When Jesus sent His disciples out to help people, He didn't send them one by one. He sent them "two by two" (Mark 6:7). Counting by 2s reminds us that we are made for community. We are better when we walk together!
"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow." (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)
The Rhythm of 2 is the Rhythm of Support.
March around the room right now. Stomp on your right foot and shout the 2s count all the way to 24! Can you do it in less than 10 seconds?
In the land of Galilee, there was a great field of golden wheat. The harvest was ready, and the workers were singing. But the grain was so small that counting every single stem was taking all day.
A wise old farmer stood up. "Stop!" he laughed. "We are counting like children. Look at your hands!"
He held up his open palm. "Five fingers! Let us gather the wheat in Handfuls!"
The workers began to grab exactly 5 stems at a time. As they tossed them into the wagon, they shouted the High-Five Song: "5... 10... 15... 20!"
Suddenly, the work became a game. A little girl standing by the wagon noticed something. "Every time we say a number, it either ends in a 5 or a 0!"
"Yes!" cried the farmer. "That is the Swing of the Hand! 5 is the full hand, and 0 is the full bundle. Back and forth we swing until the wagon is full!"
By sunset, the entire field was harvested. They didn't just count the wheat; they sang it into the barn.
Look at your hand. You have 5 fingers. If you high-five a friend, you have 10 fingers. If another friend joins, you have 15!
Try singing the 5s to the tune of "Mary Had a Little Lamb":
"Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five... thirty, thirty-five... forty, forty-five... fifty!"
The 5s count is like a pendulum. Swing your arms back and forth while you sing!

Notice the pattern? Every number ends in a 5, then a 0, then a 5, then a 0. It's like a swinging pendulum!
This song is very special because it helps us tell Time! On a clock, every big number is 5 minutes away from its neighbor. If you learn the 5s Song, you can read any analog clock in the world. You are learning to read the heartbeat of the day!
Ask your parents if they have any Nickels. A nickel is worth 5 cents. If you have 6 nickels, don't count 1, 2, 3... count 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30! You have 30 cents. The 5s count is the key to the treasure chest!
A clockmaker once said that every hour has 12 verses, and every verse is 5 minutes long.
Verse 1: Five! Verse 2: Ten! Verse 3: Fifteen!
By the time he reached the 12th verse, he had sung all 60 minutes. He knew that if he sang the 5s rhythm correctly, his clocks would never be late. The music of math keeps the time of the world.
In the Bible, the number 5 is often linked to Grace. Just like you have 5 fingers to help you serve and bless others, God gives us His grace to help us live. When we count by 5s, we can think of all the hands that are working together to make the world a better place.
"He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame." (Proverbs 10:5)
Use the High Five count to be a wise harvester of time and treasure.
Give your mom or dad a "High Five" but don't just slap hands. Say "Five!" Then do it again and say "Ten!" See if you can reach "Fifty" before they get tired of high-fiving you!
In the valley of the Mountains of Order, there lived a Giant named **Decimus**. Decimus was a very kind giant, but he was also very busy. He had to count all the sheep in the valley before the sun went down.
"If I count them one by one," Decimus boomed, "the moon will rise before I reach the end!"
So, Decimus didn't walk like a man. He took Giant Leaps. Every time his big boot hit the ground, he jumped over 9 sheep and landed on the 10th one.
"Ten!" he shouted with his first step. "Twenty!" he roared with the second.
The sheep weren't scared; they knew Decimus was a Master of Bundles. By the time Decimus had taken 10 steps, he had counted 100 sheep!
"Everything ends in a Zero," Decimus told the villagers. "Because when I step, I make sure the whole group is together. No loose ones! Zero means the 'Ones House' is empty because everyone moved to the 'Tens House' together!"
Once a year, in the City of Ten, there was a Great Festival. Every citizen had to bring a bundle of 10 fruits to the King's table.
The gates were wide open. First came the Apple Farmers. They had 5 wagons, each with 10 bundles. "Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty!" sang the gatekeeper.
Next came the Grape Growers. They had 8 baskets, each with 10 bunches. "Sixty, seventy, eighty!"
Finally, the King himself arrived with 2 giant crates of 10 gold bars. "Ninety, One Hundred!"
The table was full. The people were happy. And because everyone counted by tens, the feast could start exactly at noon! The rhythm of 10 kept the joy flowing and the work light.
Imagine taking huge steps that jump over nine numbers at a time!
The 10s are so fast they don't even need a tune! Just chant them with a steady clap:
"10! (clap) 20! (clap) 30! (clap) 40! (clap) 50! ... 100! (stomp!)"
It's the sound of victory. You are mastering the decades!

Everything in this song ends in a Zero. This is because every step is a full bundle of ten. No loose ones are left behind!
Whenever you have a huge amount of stuff to count—like a giant jar of pennies or a crowd of people—count them by tens to reach the end in a blink! This is the chant of the Great Harvest.
A Dime is worth 10 cents. It is very small, but it is very powerful. If you have 10 dimes, don't count 1, 2, 3... count 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100! You have a whole dollar. 10s are the way to count big money!
Ten is the number of Fullness. In the Bible, God gave us 10 Commandments to show us the full way to live. He also asks for a 'Tithe' (one-tenth) to remind us that everything we have is from Him. Counting by 10s helps us see how God organizes the world into perfect, full groups.
"And of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee." (Genesis 28:22)
The Rhythm of 10 is the Rhythm of Dedication.
Try to chant your 10s all the way to 100 as fast as you can. Can you do it in 3 seconds? Take a deep breath and... GO!
In the quiet meadows of the North, there were special flowers that only grew with 3 petals. They were called the Triads. Every time the wind blew, the Triads would dance. They didn't march like soldiers; they swung like a waltz.
ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three...
A young shepherd was trying to count the Triads to see how many honeybees would visit his meadow. He learned to stomp his foot on the third petal.
"Three!" (stomp). "Six!" (stomp). "Nine!" (stomp).
He noticed that this song was harder to sing than the 2s or the 5s. It didn't feel as steady. It felt like a spinning top. But as he sang, he realized that the number 3 was everywhere! He saw three legs on his stool. He saw three sides on the mountain peak. He saw three birds flying in a "V" shape.
"This is the Song of Strength," he told his sheep. "Because a three-legged stool never wobbles, and a three-stranded rope never breaks. The 3s count is the rhythm of stability!"
This song is a little harder than the others, but it is very beautiful once you find the beat. It feels like a dance.
Sing the 3s to the tune of "Jingle Bells":
"Three, six, nine... twelve, fifteen... eighteen, twenty-one... twenty-four, twenty-seven... thirty, and we're done!"
It has a swinging, three-beat feel. Sway side to side while you sing!

Think of three-leaf clovers or the three sides of a triangle. Every time you find a new triangle, you add 3 more to your count.
Sing this rhythm until it sticks in your head like your favorite hymn. Once you know the 3s, you have unlocked a huge part of the multiplication table!
Look around your house for Triangles. Do you see any? Maybe on a roof, or in a bridge made of blocks. Every triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. If you see 4 triangles, don't count 1, 2, 3... count 3, 6, 9, 12! You have 12 sides total. The 3s waltz makes you a shape master!
In a happy home, there is a rhythm of 3. There is Work, there is Play, and there is Rest.
If we only work, we get tired. If we only play, we get messy. If we only rest, we get bored. But when we waltz between the three, the home is in harmony. Counting by 3s reminds us that God's balance is the best way to live.
"And a threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
The Rhythm of 3 is the Rhythm of Strength and Unity.
Try to waltz-count by 3s while you spin in a circle. 3... (spin), 6... (spin), 9... (spin)! See if you can get to 30 without getting too dizzy to say the numbers!
In the Great Library of Knowledge, there was a map that covered an entire wall. It didn't show rivers or mountains; it showed Relationships. It was called the Master Table.
An explorer named Caleb stood before it. "I have all my songs," Caleb said. "I know the March, the High-Five, and the Waltz. But how do I find the answer to a problem I haven't memorized yet?"
The Librarian pointed to the grid. "Use your rhythms like a compass, Caleb. Look at the numbers on the left wall—those are your Rows. Look at the numbers on the ceiling—those are your Columns."
Caleb put his finger on the 4. "This is my row." He put another finger on the 7. "This is my column."
Then, he moved his fingers together. They slid across the map until they CRASHED into a single square.
"Twenty-eight!" Caleb shouted.
"Exactly," said the Librarian. "The map is just all your songs playing at the same time. The row for 2 is just the 2s song. The row for 5 is just the 5s song. When you find where they meet, you find the Truth."
Imagine a giant grid where all the numbers meet. This is the Multiplication Table. It isn't just a list of facts; it is a map of relationships!
If you want to find the answer to 3 × 4, you just use your fingers like a map explorer. Find Row 3 and Column 4. Trace them with your fingers until they meet. The spot where they crash into each other is the secret treasure: 12.

Did you know that the map works both ways? If you want to find $4 \times 3$, you can go to Row 4 and Column 3. You will land on the exact same treasure: 12!
This is because God's truth is consistent. It doesn't matter which rhythm you sing first; the result is the same. The map is symmetrical!

If you look at the Master Map from far away, you will see beautiful patterns hidden in the numbers!

Have you ever been to a big city with Streets and Avenues? Streets go one way, and Avenues go the other. If you know the number of the Street and the number of the Avenue, you can find any house in the city! The Multiplication Table is just a city where the numbers live. You are the driver!
Decimus the Giant didn't stop at 100. He knew that the 10s keep going forever!
"One hundred ten, one hundred twenty, one hundred thirty..."
If you can count to 100 by tens, you can count to a thousand, or a million! The rhythm never ends. It is the infinite music of God's creation.
"Lord, show me the map of Your Truth. Help my fingers find the right row and the right column. Let my answers be true, and let my path be straight. Amen."
"He marketh out the heavens with a span... He comprehendeth the dust of the earth in a measure." (Isaiah 40:12)
God is the Great Grid-Maker of the Stars and the Soil.
Open your workbook to the Multiplication Chart. Ask someone to name two numbers (like 5 and 6). Use your fingers to find the "Crash Spot" as fast as you can. Can you do it in 2 seconds? Ready... GO!
"God is the conductor, and we are His instruments."
One of the greatest composers in history! Bach loved math almost as much as he loved music. He built secret mathematical patterns into his songs. He knew that the rhythm of music and the rhythm of math were both gifts from God. He often signed his work Solli Deo Gloria (To God Alone be Glory).
For thousands of years, farmers and shepherds didn't have calculators. They had to count their grain and their sheep using skip counting. They sang songs while they worked to keep the rhythm. They are heroes because they used math to feed the world and provide for their families!
Before he was a King, David was a shepherd. He had to count his sheep every night. He also played the harp and wrote the Psalms. He knew how to combine the rhythm of music with the order of God's world. Many of his songs use 3-beat and 4-beat rhythms that we still use in math today!
A monk from the 1600s who spent his life studying the math behind music. He discovered the laws of "vibrating strings" and how the length of a string changes the pitch of a note. He used skip counting and multiplication to explain why some sounds are beautiful and some are noisy. He found the math in the melody!
You have joined the Hall of Heroes! You now carry the ancient rhythms in your head. When you count by 2s or 5s, you are participating in the same orderly world that Bach and the Harvesters loved. Use your rhythm to bring peace and order wherever you go!
