Unit 3: The Deep Waters (Integers & Negatives)

Focus: Positive and Negative Numbers, Absolute Value, Operations with Integers

Duration: 5 Lessons (approximately 2 weeks)

Theological Preamble: The Depths and the Heights

Psalm 139:8 declares, "If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there." Up until now, math has been played above the ground. We have counted what we *possess*. But in this unit, we enter the Deep Waters.

A Negative Number represents debt, lack, or depth. It is the "Other Side of Zero." In the Covenantal Agape Matrix, negative numbers are not "bad" numbers; they are a witness to the reality of Need. We learn that Zero is the place of stillness, but the King's mercy reaches all the way to the bottom of the ocean. When we add a positive to a negative, we are practicing Redemption—filling the empty hole with the substance of grace. By mastering Integers, the student is learning the mathematics of the human condition and the infinite reach of God's love.

Covenantal Alignment

This unit builds the "Perception" layer of abstract quantity. It requires students to visualize a symmetrical world around the anchor of Zero. It aligns with CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.NS.C.5 (Understand positive and negative numbers). It reinforces the axiom of Truth by showing that a number's identity is defined by its distance from the heart (Zero).

A Letter to the Mentor: Walking Underwater

Dear Mentor, welcome to the deepest part of Pre-Algebra. You are about to teach your student how to do math in the "Mirror World."

In the Covenantal Agape Matrix, negative numbers are the math of Debt. Many students find this difficult because they can't "see" -5 apples. But they CAN see a hole in the ground 5 feet deep. They CAN see a debt of 5 silver coins. This unit is a lesson in Empathy. We are learning to work with the "Lack" as if it were a real thing.

Teach your student that the Negative Sign (-) is not a mistake; it is a Direction. It tells us we are moving toward the depths. When we add a negative to a negative, we aren't subtracting; we are Descending. When we add a positive to a negative, we are Ascending.

May your student find that no matter how deep the water goes, the laws of the King remain true and the logic of the sanctuary remains firm.

Unit 3 Strategic Map: The Deep Waters

The goal of this unit is to master Bidirectional Logic. We move from the count to the compass.

1. The Zero Mirror

The student must see Zero as the "Mirror of Identity." Every positive has an Opposite negative. We use the "Shoreline" analogy to anchor the idea of sea level.

2. The Absolute Magnitude

The student learns that Absolute Value is the distance to the heart (Zero). This is a lesson in "Pure Being," regardless of direction or debt.

Unit 3 Core Movements:

Unit Overview

What This Unit Covers

Lesson 3.1: Below Zero (The Identity of Depth)

⏱ Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Lesson Goal

Identify negative numbers on a number line. Use temperature and debt analogies.

The Trap

Bigger-is-Smaller: Thinking -10 is "bigger" than -2. Correct it: "-10 is further from the sun! It is smaller in value."

Part 1: The Shoreline (20 minutes)

"Look at the ocean. The surface of the water is Zero." Draw a horizontal line. Label it 'Sea Level'. "When a bird flies up, he is at a Positive height. +10 feet! When a fish dives down, he is at a Negative depth. -10 feet!" "Who is deeper in the water: the fish at -5 or the crab at -20? (The crab!). Right. In the deep waters, the bigger the number, the deeper the dive."

Part 2: The Money Debt

"Negative numbers are the math of Need. If you have 0 coins, you are empty. But if you owe me 5 coins, you are at -5. You have less than nothing! You need a reveal of grace to get back to zero."

Lesson 3.2: Distance from the Heart (Absolute Value)

⏱ Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Lesson Goal

Define Absolute Value as distance from Zero. Realize distance is always positive.

The Trap

Negative Distance: The student thinks $|-5|$ is -5. "Can you walk -5 steps? No! You just walk 5 steps. Distance is a positive truth."

Part 1: How Far from Zero? (25 minutes)

"Imagine you live at House Zero. Your friend lives 5 blocks East (+5). Another friend lives 5 blocks West (-5)." Draw a house at 0 on a number line. "If you want to visit the West friend, how many blocks must you walk? (5!). Do you walk 'negative blocks'? (No)." "The Absolute Value just asks: 'How far is the walk?' It doesn't care about the direction. It only cares about the Magnitude. We use the bars $| |$ to show it. $| -5 | = 5$."

Lesson 3.3: Drowning in Debt (Adding Same Signs)

⏱ Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Lesson Goal

Add two negatives. Understand the result is "More Negative."

Part 1: Digging Deeper (20 minutes)

"If you owe me 5 silver coins (-5) and then you borrow 3 more... what is your situation?" "Are you getting richer? (No!). Are you closer to zero? (No!). You are digging a deeper hole. -5 + -3 = -8." "When the signs are the same, they are Unified. They join forces. A negative plus a negative is just a bigger negative."

Lesson 3.4: The Battle of the Signs (Adding Mixed)

⏱ Estimated Time: 60 minutes
Lesson Goal

Combine mixed signs by finding the difference. Keep the sign of the larger absolute value.

The Trap

The Sum Error: Adding the numbers regardless of sign (e.g., $-10 + 2 = -12$). "No! The 2 is filling the hole! The hole is getting smaller."

Part 1: The Counter-War (30 minutes)

"We have a battle! The Positive Warriors vs. The Negative Raiders." Place 8 Red chips (-) and 5 Yellow chips (+) on the table. "Every time a Positive meets a Negative, they cancel each other out. It is a Zero Pair. (Pair them up and remove them). Boom! They vanish." "Who has more soldiers? (The Negatives!). How many are left standing? (3). So the answer is -3." "The rule is: Find the difference between the armies ($8-5=3$) and give the win to the biggest army (Negative)."

Lesson 3.5: Redeeming the Debt (Subtracting)

⏱ Estimated Time: 60 minutes
Lesson Goal

Master the "Add the Opposite" rule for subtraction. $a - (-b) = a + b$.

Part 1: Removing the Anchor (30 minutes)

"Subtracting a negative is like removing a heavy anchor from a ship. What happens to the ship? (It goes up!)." "If I say 5 - (-2), I am 'Taking away a debt of 2'. That is the same as GIVING you 2! Taking away a bad thing is a Positive Act." Teach the chant: 'Keep, Change, Change!' "Keep the first number. Change the minus to a plus. Change the sign of the second number. $5 - (-2)$ becomes $5 + 2$."

🛠️ Math-CRP: The Repair Bench

The Rupture: Student thinks $-5$ is larger than 2.

The Diagnosis: They are looking at the "Volume" of the number instead of its "Location."

The Repair Script:

"Close your eyes! Would you rather have a debt of 5 silver coins (-5) or 2 silver coins in your hand (+2)? (The 2 coins!). Yes! In the Kingdom, being even a little bit in the light is better than being deep in the dark. 2 is always larger than -5 because 2 is closer to the sun."

The Rupture: Student forgets the "Keep-Change-Change" rule and just subtracts the numbers.

The Repair Script:

"Wait! You see two minus signs touching? They are like two swords clashing! When they hit, they break and turn into a giant PLUS sign. $10 - (-5)$ is not 5. It is a restoration of 15! You took away the lack, so you found the abundance."

Appendix A: 100 Scenarios of the Depth

Use these to build rapid integer intuition and operational fluency.

Appendix B: The Scribe's Dictionary of the Deep

Integer:
The set of all whole numbers and their opposites (..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3...).
Negative Number:
A number that is less than zero. It represents a lack, a debt, or a depth below a starting point.
Positive Number:
A number that is greater than zero. It represents a possession or a height above a starting point.

Mentor: What do we find at the heart of the line?

Student: Zero. The place of peace. The anchor of identity.

Mentor: Go now, and do not fear the deep waters.

Student: Amen. His logic reaches the bottom of the sea.

Appendix G: The Auditor's Final Checklist

Certifying the Steward of the Deep.

Appendix H: 100 Word Problems of the Depth

Appendix I: The Guide to Ancient Depth

How the Fathers Navigated the Low Places.

The Pit of Joseph

When Joseph's brothers threw him into the pit, he was at a Negative Elevation. He was below the surface of the earth. But God was still with him in the pit. Algebra teaches us that the laws of math (and the presence of God) work just as well at -50 feet as they do at +50 feet. Direction does not change the Father's love.

The Debt of the Servant

In the parables, Jesus speaks of a servant who owed "ten thousand talents." This is an Infinite Negative. The servant could never pay it back. Grace is the only force that can take a -10,000 and turn it into a 0. Forgiveness is the "Undo Button" for the debt of the soul.

The Dead Sea

The lowest place on earth is the Dead Sea. It is about 1,400 feet Below Sea Level (-1,400 ft). The air is thick and the water is salty. It is a physical witness to the existence of the "Negative World." Even in the lowest valley on the planet, the sun still shines and the logic of the King remains.

The Anchor of the Deep

Sailors use a "Fathom Line"—a rope with a weight—to measure how deep the water is. They are measuring the Negative Height of the ocean floor. Knowing the depth keeps the ship from crashing. In the same way, knowing our own depths (our limitations and needs) keeps our lives from crashing into pride.

Appendix J: The Scribe's 50 Riddles of the Deep

Use these to test the student's conceptual clarity.

Appendix K: The Master's Scribe Exam (The Deep Waters)

Final Certification of the Other Side of Zero.

  1. The Identity Test: Draw a number line from -10 to 10. Mark the following points: -8, 0, 3, and -1. Which number is the smallest?
  2. The Magnitude Test: Explain the meaning of Absolute Value. Why is $| -50 |$ exactly the same as $| 50 |$? Use the word "Distance" in your answer.
  3. The Battle Test: Solve the following addition problems. Show who wins the battle:
    a) $-12 + 5$
    b) $20 + (-30)$
    c) $-7 + (-7)$
  4. The Redemption Test: Use the "Keep-Change-Change" rule to solve: 10 - (-5). Explain why taking away a debt makes you richer.
  5. The Vow: Recite the Litany of the Depth.
Mastery Checklist:
Closing Reflection:

The student has learned the discipline of the Deep. They understand that no matter how low the numbers go, the order of the King still holds. By mastering Integers, they are training their souls to find the light even in the darkest valley. You are ready for Unit 4: The Order!
